Trouble Sleeping? Are You Taking Melatonin? Be Careful!
High doses can have adverse effects and even long-term damage.
Want better sleep? Drink more water, turn on night light features on your devices, don't lay in your bed during the day, lower your room or body temperature, and limit any stimulation to your brain.
As soon as you wake up, get out of bed and look at natural sunlight.
This will send your body signals to wake up and start your metabolism. As soon as you're getting ready to go to bed, dim your lights or look at the dark outdoors. This will also send your body signals to prepare to bed and slowly lower your body temperature.
Lights from your devices can send confusing signals to your body. So keep your phone on a table away from you and use any sleep mode options.
Poor sleep does more damage than you think!
You'll be at higher risk of diabetes, high blood pressure, heart failure, stroke, obesity, depression, weaker immune system, and it can even make a harsh and noticeable impact on your appearance. Sleep deprivation creates a hormone called "cortisol' which destroys proteins that keep your skin smooth and healthy.
Increased cortisol from sleep deprivation is worse than you thought.
This stress-response hormone does more than just make you look older. It also destroys your muscles and signals your body to store fat.
It's not the end of the world.
With all that being said...don't stress about sleeping! It'll make it harder for you to sleep when you're tossing and turning in your bed, wondering why you're not already asleep. It's as easy as putting your phone away when you're in bed and drinking enough water throughout the day. It may be more complicated; for most, it's as easy as making minor changes to your lifestyle.
Be careful about taking melatonin supplements and be aware of the consequences of overdosing!
